In China people used ice for that purpose 3,000 years ago. Where did they get the ice? From the frozen lakes of course!
People would use any type of material – sawdust, cloth, any material to slow heat flow to the precious possession.
If you have ever went up the mountains in Southern California area during the ski season, you probably noticed quite a few trucks coming down, carrying piles of snow on the truck bed or on the roof top. Not only it’s useful for kids to play with… If we were living in ancient Rome or Greece, we’d probably use it to make our cool drinks too! (No yellow snow in my drink please!)
Let’s fast forward to the not so ancient times…
The first “refrigerator” was invented in 1803 by a Maryland farmer named Thomas Moore. It was a wooden tub filled with ice enclosed into a metal box covered with rabbit fur. What an idea!
By 1830 the iceboxes were used all over in American kitchens.
In 1834, inventor Jacob Perkins built a machine that cooled air inside it. But only a century later refrigerators became affordable not only to rich people.
Refrigerators from the late 1800s until 1929 used toxic gasses (methyl chloride and sulfur dioxide) as refrigerants. Several fatal accidents occurred in the 1920s when the methyl chloride leaked, causing three American corporations to fund research and develop a less dangerous method. Their efforts led to the discovery of Freon. Over the course of just a few years, compressor refrigerators using Freon became the standard for almost all home kitchens.
Today, over 132 million refrigerators are at work in homes all over United States.
To add to that are heavy duty refrigerators used in restaurants and commercial kitchens.
