Common Washing Machine Problems

Homeowners are often faced with a number of washing machine problems that can include (but are not limited to) power issues, excessive noise, failure to drain, spin cycle issues, failure to finish the cycle, and unit leakage. The following is more information on these specific issues:
  • Power Issues - It is quite common for machines to stop working when circuit breakers, lid switches, and fuse boxes fail to work properly.
  • Excessive Noise - There are a number of factors that can cause excessive noise production including drainage, spin cycle, and balance issues.
  • Washer has noise during spin cycle - Whirlpool, Maytag, Sears - Diagnostics & Repair

  • Failure to Drain - If a washer is failing to drain, it is possible that the drain hose may be kinked or plugged, a lint sock filled, or house drain system blockage. Additionally, there are some washers that feature a side-check valve that can become clogged. More serious issues can surround a faulty pump that can lock up or seize to work or transmission problems that see gears become worn and cease to work all-together.

  • Front Load Washer Repair - Not Draining or Spinning - How to Unclog the Drain Pump

  • Spin Cycle Issues - When this occurs, it is possible that the lid isn't closing properly, the speed selector switch is stuck between two different speeds, the belt is over worn or damaged, the drive pulley worn and failing to turn the drive belt, and/or there are faulty transmission and clutch assemblies.
  • Washer Not Spinning - Motor Reset

  • Unit Leakage - A leaky washer must never be ignored, as it may cause major damage to your property. Common reasons for leakage include faulty drain and fill hoses, lose door seals, cracked or broken bleach dispensers, and leaky pumps and tubs. If for any reason your machine is leaking, you should have the problem assessed as soon as possible.

Common Gas and Electric Dryer Issues

A dryer is basically a large drum that works to dry wet laundry. The drying process occurs when a motor with pulleys turns a drum that is connected via a number of belts. The air is heated when a gas or electric heater element blows air through the drum. The temperature is then controlled by a thermostat per the dryer control panel. If for any reason the door to the dryer opens, the dryer will fail to operate. Other common issues can include:
  • Lint Blockage- If lint builds up within dryer lint traps, vents and blowers, the machine will fail to properly dry clothing. Additionally, the exhaust vent that sits between the exterior wall or basement window can become clogged. This should also be cleaned out regularly.
  • Door Gasket and Door Switch - As mentioned prior, if the door fails to close properly or the door switch isn't working, the unit will most likely not operate. It is very possible that both the switch and door gasket may need to be replace in time.
  • Motor Failure - If for any reason your dryer motor fails to operate, the unit will not work. Assistance is definitely needed in the case that a motor fails to work properly.
  • How to Troubleshoot and Replace your Dryer Motor:

  • Thermostat Issues - The thermostat is very important to assure proper function of a dryer. It is possible that a control switch can stick and fail to effectively moderate temperature.
  • Gas and Electric Heating Elements - It is also quite common to have issues with gas and electric heating elements. Both heater types have unique issues that are best analyzed by a licensed technician. Some fixes can be quite complex, while others may require part replacements.

Salvage or Scrap

Your 10-year-old clothes dryer has broken down again. It's cheap enough to fix, but should you just replace it? Probably not, and here's why:

According to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, as long as your dryer has a moisture sensor (nearly all models in operation today do), it functions at about the same efficiency as current models. Replacing a dryer that can perform as efficiently as a new model not only costs money upfront without providing any energy savings, but it also puts a dryer-size burden on landfills and adds to the demand for energy to produce and transport these bulky appliances.

A dryer's average life is about 13 years. If yours is younger than that, you'll likely get enough good use out of it to justify calling the repairman. You can add years to your dryer's life by line drying clothes whenever possible. You'll also save money and carbon dioxide emissions by hanging your laundry out to dry.

When it is time to buy a new dryer, look for one with the moisture sensor in the drum rather than in the exhaust vent. It will shut off a little sooner and use slightly less energy.
